Five Smart Ways to Leverage Your Brilliance for Faster Success

Yes, You Are Brilliant Right Now

Just in case a little voice in your head said, "Oh, I don't have brilliance to leverage..." I want to laser focus in where you are at for a moment and show you how you are brilliant and your life is full of possibilities right now.

So, picture yourself in a long line. Yes, there are many people in front of you who know more than you do, their brilliance is shining, and you are inspired. And you feel like, "Who am I to leverage what I know?"

What you don't realize is that there is a long line of people behind you...and they see your "Smart Glow," and they are waiting for you just to turn around and start teaching them, inspiring them and sharing your brilliance in a way that only you can. They need you to lead them, or they won't be able to live their purpose and go out into the world and create positive change.

So you have a few choices, you can turn around and start to shine, or you can step out of line for a month, a year or a lifetime and be a disservice to yourself and others. You have the brilliance to leverage, but you absolutely must decide if you will step up and step into your purpose and share your brilliance.

Now that you have embraced your brilliance, let's talk about the best ways to leverage it to reach the most people.

These smart methods are powerful because they are scalable. They cost you the same amount of time to do them for 50 people or 500,000 people. And they have an extremely long shelf life, especially when they are interwoven with the Internet. How you get the tools in front of 500,000 people eventually is what we teach here at the Institute in our many programs.

1. Articles. The Internet is driven by words. Nothing is more powerful than words. Really. Your ability to teach through writing or to have someone listen to you talk and create articles for you is very powerful. Articles can be written once and then used in multiple ways as soon as you create them. You can run it in your newsletter, post it on your blog, post it at ezinearticles.com, reslant it for a future book, link it on your blog from the social networks, incorporate parts of it into a signature talk when you speak and so much more. From one single article, you can change the world if you understand how to leverage it over and over again so that your brilliance can shine wherever people are standing in line.

2. Books. One of my absolute favorite ways to leverage brilliance in business is by packaging information (essentially many articles) into book form. Physical books and digital books are highly respected tools in our society, and their shelf life lasts for decades. You do the work once and leverage it for years and years. Books are such a part of our culture that people carry them wherever they go in physical form of a book or in their digital readers. And books are one of the best tools I know of to leverage PR opportunities, speaking opportunities and money making lead opportunities.

3. Videos. Nothing is more scalable and easy to produce than a video. With so many low-cost flip video cameras available that you just plug and upload, you absolutely have no excuse not to shine in front of the camera and share your brilliance in either short or long videos. People love to learn and be entertained with video as well as share it with others. And remember, you create it once, and it can educate 50 people or 500,000 people.

4. CDs/DVDS. Never miss the opportunity to package your brilliance in the physical form also. Remember, if you are teaching once, it can live on forever off the Internet, too, by creating CDs and DVDs from teleseminars or from videos. These physical tools are passed around and easy to listen to away from the computer. I do think as more and more people become savvy with all digital devices, CDs and DVDs will become obsolete probably in the next five years...but for now, there are a lot of people still sharing their brilliance in a big way with these simple leverage tools. For instance, here at the Smart Women's Institute of Entrepreneurial learning, one-third of our revenues are based on information products alone.

5. Memberships. Lastly, one of my favorite ways to leverage is by building a community in an industry and then leading it. This method is a business model, not a tool. It is extremely powerful when you understand how to do it. Creating a package of scalable products and services that you create once and sell over and over again is just simply smart and one of the many highly leverageable ways to use this model. Tips for Building Your Entrepreneur Support Network

We all need a network of people we can count on, both in our personal lives and in our businesses. For entrepreneurs in particular, support networks can be the difference in feeling like you're on your own and feeling deeply connected with other business owners and having a team of advisers, friends and partners to turn to when you're not exactly sure which direction to go.

Check out a few tips to help you create your amazing support network from entrepreneur Tina Wells:

Form a small group of five like-minded entrepreneurs. You've probably heard of these "mastermind" groups. However, what do you call a group for people who haven't mastered something yet? Doesn't matter -- just build one quickly. Be sure that the other four individuals you engage don't have competing businesses, and consider ways you can help each other. Additionally, be aware of time. You're all busy, so don't plan to meet more than 60 to 90 minutes once each month.
Join social clubs. It's essential to develop your personal network, and joining social clubs is a fantastic way to do so. You'll be exposed to great events in addition to meeting prospective clients, employees and friends.
Join associations. Are you a woman entrepreneur? Look into local chapters of the National Association of Women Business Owners. If you're in public relations, for example, check out Public Relations Society of America. Many fields have associations, so do a search for one in your field; you can obtain great discounts, invitations to great conferences and a network of like-minded peers. Since entrepreneurship can be lonely, developing a group of peers is important.

Tamara Garrison-Thomas: Garrison Prosperity Solutions (GPS) offers several services for startups, network marketing and small business owners. MW: When and why did you start your businesses?
Tamara: I began in network marketing over seven years ago. I had little help and had to learn the dos and don'ts on my own. MW: How did you become interested in these areas?

MW: What are some of your future goals?
Tamara: My primary goal is to continue to help people start businesses and "fire their boss." I want to inspire people to feel good about their abilities, stop hesitating, and just go for it!

MW: Who and what inspires you?
Tamara: My mother and father have always encouraged me to go after my dreams. Being successful business owners themselves, they give me a lot of advice and support me in any way. I want to continue to make them proud and carry on their legacy.

MW: What do you love most about owning your own business?
Tamara: Believe it or not, I love the adrenaline rush of finding my next business partner or customer. I make it a challenge for myself and give myself deadlines. It's fun doing everything possible to meet deadlines. I enjoy the journey of finding, contacting, following up and booking!

MW: What is your favorite inspirational quote/saying?
Tamara: One of my favorite quotes is "Some people develop a wishbone where their backbone should be." -Anonymous. I know it seems a bit harsh, but it is the truth. I can't tell you how many great ideas I hear from people daily, and yet they never do anything with them. Sometimes, you just have to take a leap of faith, and that's what I help people do.
On the other hand, one of my favorite scriptures is "I lift up my eyes to the mountains where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip he who watches over you will not slumber." -Psalm 121:1-3. This scripture beautifully reminds me that my help comes from the Lord. I do not have to worry about anything or want for anything because the Lord will help me.

MW: What tips/advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
Tamara: "Just do it!" As I stated earlier, I hear so many great ideas that never go into fruition. The only understanding I have of this hesitance is FEAR. Fear is common, but if you never try anything because of this, you will NEVER start a business or do something new. I encourage people who want to start businesses to just jump in there and get started. What do you have to lose except the time it's taking you to decide when to do it, if to do, etc.? Find someone you can work with to help you through, but "Just do it!"

6 Tips for Setting Your 2012 Goals

The new year will be here in just a few short days (can you believe it?)! Of course you know that setting goals is important because they help you reach the dreams you have in your life; so, here are a few tips to help you set amazing goals for 2012:

Make them reasonable. You want your goals to be achievable and specific so that they are motivating. For example, one of your goals may be to earn more money in your business. However, it's not enough for the goal to be just "make more money;" it's more effective to have a specific amount: $20,000, $50,000, etc.
Write them down. Doing this makes your goals concrete and helps them stick. If you try to just remember your goals in your mind, you'll likely forget what some of them were. So, write a post on your blog, (if you have one), or keep a journal so you can always look back and see what your goals are.
Share your goals with other people. This helps you become accountable, and like writing them down, sharing your goals can reinforce the goals in your mind. Talk with a close friend or family member about your goals, and be sure to share your progress with them throughout the year. These individuals can help you stay focused, regain focus if you lose it and encourage you through the rough times.

How to Kick the Perfectionist Habit

I am a perfectionist in recovery (can you relate?). It is a habit that I'm working on, but admittedly, I still struggle with it from time to time. Fortunately, I found this article with great tips on kicking the perfectionist habit. If you need help, too, read on:

1. Address the real issue. At its source, perfectionism really isn't about a deep love of being meticulous. Actually it's about fear: The fear of disappointing other people, of making a mistake, of failure and/or success. So, the next time you're going around in endless circles on a project, ask yourself what you're afraid of (regardless if you feel consciously fearful or not); go deep for an answer. You'll be surprised at what you find out.

Once you've figured it out, deal with it head-on. Whether you're uneasy about working with a new client or afraid that you'll miss a deadline, go through the worst-case scenarios in your mind. Keep coming up with worse and worse situations until you can't anymore. A lot of times, when you deal with fear face-to-face, it loses its power...and then you're free to work more productively.

2. Make time limits. At times, it's difficult to know when you've gone from being meticulous to obsessive. When you're in the thick of a project, it's easy to really believe you have to spend all that time brainstorming, researching, revising, etc. Many times, it's only after you've been working for hours and hours that you see that half the work you've been doing wasn't really needed and that you wasted a lot of time.

Prevent time-wasting by setting an objectively sensible time limit to finish each task. If you run out of time, no matter where you are in the task, stop and move to a different one. This has two advantages: 1) It's like an alarm to let you know your perfectionist habits might be taking over; and 2) It forces you to take a breather and gives your mind the opportunity to relax. When you get back to the task, you'll look at it in a fresh way and be prepared against letting your perfectionism get the best of you.

How to Write a Sales Letter That SELLS

No matter what type of business you're in - you've probably faced the challenge of trying to sell your products and services online. Maybe you have a brief description and hope the picture sells itself. Or maybe you went a little further, listing a few paragraphs, the price and a few testimonials.

If you're not getting the response you were expecting, it might be time to try something new. And a VERY effective tool to sell online is to create a special sales page w/a "slippery slope" sales letter.

Remember that game Chutes & Ladders? If you landed on a space that had a chute on it, you just went down. No turning back. That's how your sales letter should be -- a "slipper slope" that pulls in the reader because it's so compelling and interesting

Here's a basic outline of the 13 elements you want to include in your sales letter. (To see an example of them all in action, visit the sales page for my program called 24-7 Web Sales: Get More Leads and Clients Online at Little to No Cost).

1. Limit your navigation. Your web visitors should not be distracted by links that take her to your bio, other products, etc. The idea is to keep her on this page, reading your copy, focused and inviting her to order.

2. Give a powerful headline. Your headline can make or break your sales. If it's not compelling, your visitor will click away. Here's an easy headline formula: "How to ___________ so you can _______." Make sure the second part gives a big benefit, for example, "double your business" or "gain peace of mind."

3. Discuss the problem the prospect has, or incorporate your own story. Marketers call this "pushing the 'ouch' button." First discuss the problem or pain that the reader has, and then lead in to how your product will solve it. Or share your own failure-to-success story that the reader can empathize with.

4. Tell us who you are. If I'm going to buy your stuff, I'd like to know why you're qualified to sell what you're selling. Give me the feeling that you've learned a lot about this topic and want to share it with me.

Add a picture, video or audio message to help the reader instantly feel like she knows you better, increasing the "trust factor." And people buy from those they feel they know, like and trust!

5. Use bullets like mini headlines. Lay out everything I'll get from your product. Don't just list your table of contents verbatim! Turn each point into an exciting secret. For example, suppose your e-book features five tips on how to save money on groceries. That bullet could read, "Revealed: 5 ways you can save hundreds of dollars on your monthly grocery bill."

6. List plenty of testimonials. Show your prospects they won't be the first to buy. It's more effective to weave-in testimonials throughout your sales letter than to have a separate section for them. Give each person's full name and Web address and for extra power, post their photo and an audio or video testimonial as well.

7. Tell us why your product is such a great value. How does the price of your product compare if I hired you one-on-one? For example, your manual is a great value at $49 if an hour consultation with you would run me $250.

8. Throw in a few great bonuses. Offer special bonuses (preferably created by you) that are so good that you could sell them alone if you wanted to. It could be a list of resources, a collection of articles, a complimentary product, extra tips on a certain subject or a free consultation.

9. Give a guarantee. This puts your prospect at ease, giving her no reason to NOT buy. The amount of sales you GAIN from this strategy dramatically outweighs the risk. What, how and how long you guarantee can depend on many factors.

10. Request immediate action by having a limited time offer. Some sales pages use trick scripts to make it seem like the offer always ends on that day at midnight, but I find these insulting. If you really will be raising your price soon (and you always should be), list the exact date and stick to it. Otherwise, just say it's an introductory, limited-time offer.

11. Make it ABSURDLY CLEAR what to do next. Nothing bothers me more than when I'm at a Website, have my credit card ready, and I can't find the order link! Make your order process idiot-proof. Exampple: "Click below to order now." Also, you may even sprinkle in order links throughout your page -- some people will be ready to buy before they get to the bottom.

12. Make one last plea. In your P.S., right after your signature, emphasize that I should act now. For example, "Don't miss out on this great opportunity. Remember you can buy now and change your mind at any time."

13. Don't forget your contact information! Readers WILL have questions, so provide an email address on your site that you or someone else will check at least daily. Also, don't you feel better buying from a Web site that lists a real address and phone number?

Facebook Posting Methods That Work!

Have questions about marketing on Facebook? Well, a new study from a San Francisco-based social media strategy firm provides an in-depth analysis of the top 20,000 Facebok pages and up to a quarter million posts in an effort to figure out the most useful posting methods.

In a just-released report Engagement and Interaction: A Scientific Approach to Facebook Marketing, Momentus Media gives answers to seven of the most frequently asked questions by Facebook page admins:

When is the best time to post? Although weekends and off-peak hours from 2 PM to 5 AM are times when page admins are least likely to add a new post, posts during those times get the highest interaction rates. On the other hand, Thursdays have the highest number of postings during the week and the lowest interaction rate. Since a high level of postings cause a lower interaction rate from users, posting in off-peak hours means you'll obtain more interaction from fans.

How many times should I post per day? While you may think too many posts would offend your fans, the report indicates that frequent posting actually increases interaction. And as you might guess, fewer posts lessen the chances of users seeing them. Although unsubscribe rates increase after three posts per day, they level off at higher frequencies. The secret? Find the balance between optimizing interaction and managing unsubscribers; this will be different for every business.

What kind of content draws the most interaction? Hands down, photos produce the highest interaction rate for the six varieties of content; status updates are number two, then -- in descending order-- it's video, music and links. Photos are at the top since they're visual, simple to digest and draws emotion.

Stay Grounded and Connected with a Success Journal

It's said our purpose here on earth is to create, and I see achievement as simply stepping into our best creations. Whether it be making a million dollars or making our most delicious batch of cupcakes ever, achievement inspires. It encourages us to keep bettering our best and also excites others to reach for the stars as well.

When you have conquered a goal or challenge that once seemed impossible, you feel on top of the world, and with that comes an enormous sense of pride and satisfaction. But, that's not all. Success is energizing and a huge self-confidence booster, as you realize what you are really capable of! So achievement breeds more achievement.

For each goal you achieve, view it as the first step into a much bigger venture -- it's the end of one journey and the beginning of many more. And one great way to stay connected with your success is to RECORD it.

One of the best things I ever did for myself, and my success, was to start keeping a success journal. It's my secret tool to winning big.

Buy a pretty notebook and keep it near your bed. I just picked up a new one from Amazon.com. Every evening, before you go to sleep, write down at least three successes from your day. If you find this a little daunting at first, remember this can be anything from big to small. My list often includes both. I had a chuckle recently when reviewing my list from one day -- it included "I was honored as one of Ernst & Young's Winning Women for 2010" along with opted for a salad instead of burger for lunch" and "organized file cabinet." That's how life is, ladies (and gents). The crucial thing is to get started.

You can write your journal entries at any time of the day, but if you do it as I do -- last thing at night -- you'll drift off to sleep in a positive frame of mind. I find sometimes it even helps me wake up with solutions to problems I had not considered the day before-- my subconscious kept wanting to achieve while I was sleeping!

The value of doing this every day is that it will not only increase your self-confidence, but it will motivate you to do more. Try it, and you'll see-- I promise.

I also love opening up my success journal when something is not going well. If I become discouraged over a project that isn't coming together how it should, or I'm down in the dumps over a mistake that I made, I open my journal to help remind myself how much I have accomplished already.

The good news: success becomes a part of you!

The act of writing down your successes daily-- especially at night before you go to bed-- fixes them in your memory, and they become a part of you. Your journal will continually and actively remind you that you are an achiever. This will keep your momentum going and help create more success in your life.

To observe this occasion, below are some tips on how you can grow your business in this economy from CEO Coach Yolonda Mason. Although the economy may be slow, there are some entrepreneurs who are successful. And their success comes from remaining focused on the main strategies that ensure success. Here are some ways you can be successful, too:

Discover your 10 sales balloons. These represent the different ways a business will set out to generate leads and boost their brand awareness. The strategies will be different for each business, but the main thing is to do some of everything, all the time. Examples include getting referrals from customers and clients, networking, hosting workshops or seminars, distributing a newsletter and creating strategic alliances. All of these are strategies you can use to connect with potential customers. Mason says that entrepreneurs should be sure their businesses use all 10 strategies as opposed to just one or two-- you never know when a prospect might hear a marketing message. And if you only focus on one or two methods, you may miss out on certain opportunities.

Target market. In a not-so-great economy, it's even more essential to focus on who, exactly, your target market is and the marketing message. You must be sure you're talking to the right customers, and that's why you must understand your target market. If you're creating a business, do market research before your product launch. If you're an established business with declining sales, it might be time for you to revise your market research; some of your target market's demographic might have changed.

11 Things I've Learned from Lifeclass

Along with millions of other people around the world, I've been watching, loving and learning from Oprah's Lifeclass. It's been really inspiring and thought provoking; here are 11 things I've taken away by watching:

Your real job is to figure out your calling, who you're meant to be and find out how to do it in the best way.
Sometimes, you have to do what you don't want to build a foundation to do what you really want.
Honoring your calling makes everything else better about your life. Honoring and heeding your calling feeds and fuels your life.

If you've ever watched a turtle slowly cross the road to get to the other side, you know it's a long journey across. As a business consultant, I talk to small business owners regularly who are at a crossroad and frantically want to take their businesses to the next level but finding it difficult to get 'unstuck.'

At a recent business conference in Washington, DC, I met Nell Merlino, CEO of Count Me In and creator of the Make Mine a Million initiative. In our conversation about how to avoid being 'stuck,' she stated, "To avoid being stagnant, it is imperative for women entrepreneurs to think BIGGER. To think and dream bigger will enable you to take your business to the next level!"

If your business has been a bit stagnant lately, here are five strategies to overcome your fear and get unstuck:

Conduct a SWOT Analysis
To move forward, you need to determine where you are at in your business. When conducting a SWOT, you are analyzing your business strengths, weaknesss, opportunities and threats. Strengths and weaknesses are internal conditions of your business. According to experts, most small businesses are great at looking at the internal aspects but fail to look externally, which are threats and opportunities. Take a closer look; here are some key questions you must be able to answer when creating your SWOT:

Strengths:

What do you do well? For example, review your sales, operations, marketing and management.
What are your core competencies?
What experience do you bring to the table?

Weaknesses:

Where do you lack resources? For example, evaluate areas such as customer service, marketing, accounting and business planning processes.
In what areas can you make improvements?
Where are you losing revenue?

Opportunities:

What new requests are your customers asking for? Can you fulfill their needs?
What are the technological advancements?
What are the economic trends that benefit you?

Threats:

What are the negative economic trends?
What are the negative political and social trends?
Where are your vulnerabilities?

Set SMART Goals
Your business success depends on designing an effective goal-setting strategy. Goal setting is crucial if you want to remain successful and competitive. Once you identify what goals you want to implement, you will need to find a way to review and measure progress. Some goals will take time to achieve, so it is important to measure your progress regularly. Try implementing SMART Goals into your planning. SMART Goals is a simple tool used by businesses to formulate an actionable plan for results. SMART illustrates the five characteristics of an efficient objective:

S- specific
M- measurable
A- attainable
R- realistic
T- timely

A common reason for failure in completing goals is having too many on your plate. Determine what your priorities are and then focus on them. By prioritizing your goals, you are focusing on those that are important to the overall success of your company. The key to success is setting goals for your business is making sure they are attainable and measurable.

Create Practical Time Management Goals
Once you've set your goals, you need a plan to manage them. Your time is your most valuable asset! Being able to manage your time efficiently is paramount! Time management skills are extremely important as you go through your day wearing the many hats it takes to run a small business.

Why do you want to set specific goals to manage your time effectively? Well, setting simple goals will force you to plan your time wisely, thus allowing you to get a sense of achievement and reduce work and life stress. For example, if spending time with your family is important, try working fewer hours on Friday so that you can honor that goal.

By scheduling your time based on your goals, you can assess if your goals truly align with your core values, both professionally and personally. If you find that your goals are out of align, then you are able to identify key areas that need adjusting before they get out of control.

Design a Stellar Customer Service Strategy
Having a well thought out and planned customer service strategy is a vital and important part of your business model. What is quality customer service? It involves relationship building, establishing communication, building trust and resolving potential problems or conflicts.

Are you at the top of your customer service game? Do you have processes in place to handle customer complaints? How do you measure quality service? According to most consumer surveys, a typical business hears from about four percent of its unhappy customers, while 96 percent just go away, and 91 percent will never come back.

Don't sit on your morals! You should never get too comfortable; instead, regularly assess the strengths and weaknesses of the quality of your services, your processes and your customer approach. As a business owner, you should make it a practice to over deliver and under promise.

Measure your Progress
You've been stuck in this rut for a while, and chances are, you weren't measuring your customers' satisfaction. Make it a part of your day-to-day routine to ask your customers for their opinions. Welcome suggestions about how you could improve their experience. A few ways that you can gather their feedback:

Surveys or questionnaires. The most effective way I have found is to create electronically. Though there are several popular services, I have had the best experience with Survey Monkey.
Phone. Make sure you are professional, and ask permission to take up their time. Create a simple script so that you can stay on target and consistent.
Email. This is a quick and easy way. Check your message for grammar and other inaccuracies.

Getting unstuck and out of your rut takes effort and intention. Moving through and letting go of your fears will enable you to stay focused and keep it moving!

A Better Me: A 52 Week Challenge

I AM LOST.
I am lost in transition. I am in a period in my life where there is so much I want to do, goals I NEED to accomplish, just things that I need to do to make sure I am working towards being the BEST that I can be! It's so easy for me to get caught up in the happenings of life I forget what really matters. ME. I matter. With being a mom, daughter, friend, essentially that ONE person that everyone depends on, put their burdens on and the leader in most things, it can be kind of overwhelming. Then something happens. It becomes redundant; I get sad/depressed and stuck in a rut until it is time to do it all over again. I NEEDED to do something about it. I was tired of feeling the same old defeated way. I was bored, confused, distracted and just freaking tired.

THEN. THERE. WAS. FEAR.
Yes, I was scared. Terrified that yes, I wanted all these changes, I had all these goals, and yet I had no idea how I was ever going to fit them into my busy life, much less accomplish them. I have NO discipline! I have a real problem with discipline. The last goal I had completely went kaput! I told myself that I was going to break the habit of cursing ( I sometimes curse like a sailor; don't judge me), yet I called the blog owner a bitch (I just talk to her like that) before the goal was even two minutes old. Yeah, I was a real winner. What in the Fudge Popsicle stick (seeee, I'm trying) was I going to do? I can't just make a goal, say that I am going to do it and NOT stick to it. I do that ALL the time. I was tired of disappointing myself. So what did I do???

I CONFIDED IN A FRIEND.
So, I spoke to my friend who I'll call Christine (which, by the way, is her real name) and told her my feelings, my thoughts, my fears. Like the good friend that she is, she told me like it was. She said, "Yahna, you know what your problem is? You just don't know how to do you. Just do you." Sounds simple, right? Not. I understood the concept; however, to actually adhere to it was going to be the problem. How do I do this "JUST DOING ME CRAP?" Then, something happened.

A FRIEND HAD A PERSONAL CRISIS.
She was settling with her boyfriend and was unhappy. She was the adult in the relationship, and he was the child. Great guy in the sense of how he treated and loved her, but I guess there is more to a relationship than love. Her relationsihp proved it, especially when it started to break her spirit. Relationships shouldn't break your spirit, but heck, it was starting to show. This girl was very strong, very independent, a mother, a hustler, a go-getter, a diva, smart, funny, sexy, yet when looking at her, I saw me.

SHE WAS LOST
Just like me, she was lost. Getting trapped in everyday happenings of life, we forget. There is so much we have to be and live up to that before we even do for ourselves, the hesitation, guilt and fear settles in, and we stop. Just like that, we get defeated. While taking a break from life on my friend's couch instead of my therapist's (which I have yet to get, any suggestions?), BAM; it hit me. I had an A-HA moment while I was writing down my list of goals that I might or might not accomplish. Why not try to accomplish our goals, which happened to be the same but different all together? Great idea, right? Yeah. DUH! What better way to accomplish a goal other than with the help of a friend? Until...

ANOTHER AWESOME IDEA HIT ME SQUARE IN THE JAW...
Why try to accomplish all these goals at once? Not only would it be very hard to complete, but it can essentially become VERY boring, very overwhelming and super boring. No one likes boring. You can spruce it up so many ways, but when you have the symptoms of being an ADHD adult like me, you better mix that shit up (I'm trying-- *shrugs*). Being the super smart person that I am (totally being facetious, though I am totally smart), I figured why not make this a weekly challenge? We had enough goals to last until the APOCALYPSE, so why not at least go for it before the world ends. A whole 52 weeks of just focusing on YOU. Jump in with two feet on the ground. No turning back. No regrets. I mean, seriously, what is the worst that can happen? Absolutely NOTHING! (By the way, if you thought that something could go wrong with this, you are totally being negative. Stop it!).

WHAT WE DID...
Was organized our goals. Separated them into categories of spiritual, health, finances, relationships and miscellaneous (don't ask). We numbered our goals and listed them by importance, which, of course, was pretty hard because they are ALL equally important. Then, we had the daunting task of actually figuring out our main focus point. DOING US. DOING ME. So, we got the list together, and every week, we will focus on a new task and the following week, we would not only focus on a new goal but continue to stack our focus on the previous goal. I think it's a great idea. Don't you? Every six weeks, there will be a free week where we can monitor our progress and do something fun and entertaining. I think this DOING ME challenge will be great.

You definitely can. What better way to change your life than on a Monday morning when it's totally UNEXPECTED? You can follow this blog where every week, I will list each goal, and I will check in with you to tell you my progress, what worked and what didn't. Though because my life is very colorful, I'm pretty sure there will be some crazy stories, but hey, we are friends, right? Don't judge me, and I won't judge you. The cool thing about this is every week, you can tailor the goal to fit you. For instance, the first goal for this week is to...
Week 1: Praying- Focus on putting GOD first and including him in everything.
Challenge: Try praying more, reading scriptures, writing down thoughts that motivate you. You will need it in the upcoming weeks!
You may not be into religion or church, whatever floats your boat. But, there is something you may need to work on spiritually. Use this week to figure out what it is. Until next week = )

Mocha Writer: What is Right-Hand Mrs.?
Oneka Bady: Right-Hand Mrs. is an Administrative Consulting Firm that provides custom-tailored administrative and managerial packages to professionals in the hair and beauty industries.

MW: When and why did you start your business?
Oneka: I started Right-Hand Mrs. in December 2010. I worked solely with one hair stylist from August 2010 until December 2010 as her personal assistant. When I started, I knew that she was a very successful stylist who was by-appointment only and traveled between two states, servicing clients. What I didn't know was that she would stay up until 4 A.M. every night doing back office tasks, all after being in the salon for 12 hours. She would be exhausted and was getting burned out. I saw a need in an industry that was barely touched and dove right in.

MW: Who is your target market?
Oneka: My target market is traveling artists and by-appointment only artists, particularly hair stylists, makeup artists, nail technicians and estheticians.

MW: How did you become interested in doing administrative consulting and particularly for your target market?
Oneka: I've been in the medical field all my life. Working in the hair and beauty industries was all new to me. Originally, I considered working with small business owners and event planners. Then I thought that I could break into an untouched market and be the first to do so. I so fell in love with the glitz and glamour of the industry and decided to grow. This was the best decision I've made to date.
Artists that take walk-ins will not really benefit from working with an administrative consultant. Artists that are by-appointment only need assistance with bookings, responding to emails, scheduling, customer service, etc. Traveling artists need assistance with arrangements, being booked solid, accepting deposits to decrease/eliminate no shows, etc.

MW: What are some of your future goals?
Oneka: I see Right-Hand Mrs. becoming an agency that trains people to become administrative consultants and then pairing them with clients. I also see it transitioning from being a service-based business to being a freedom-based business. By this I mean being able to promote and sell informational products in the form of ebooks, teleseminars, workbooks, etc.

MW: Who and what inspires you?
Oneka: Working a dead end job is what inspires me. I want to be able to leave a legacy and promote entrepreneurship so that my children will never have to work for anyone. My very first client is who inspires me. She packed up and moved across the country, basically to start over from scratch and made it happen all in one year. She is one of the most sought after Hair Extension Specialists in the country, with clients coming from as far away as Kuwait and Dubai. She made a name for herself in this industry and made no excuses while doing it all under 25-years-old. I'm very proud of her and proud to say that she is my BIG little sister.

MW: What do you love most about owning Right-Hand Mrs.?
Oneka: This, by far, is nothing I've ever experienced in Corporate America. At this time in my life, the freedom to travel and create my own schedule are some great perks that I enjoy. Arranging photo shoots and attending grand openings of my clients are the best. Most importantly, [I enjoy] seeing my clients regain the love for their craft because they are no longer bogged down with the administrative tasks that come along with being a sought after artist.

MW: What is your favorite inspirational quote/saying?
Oneka: Faith is: Following without knowing where; Believing without knowing how; Trusting without knowing why.

MW: What tips/advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
Oneka: Running a business is not as easy at it looks. We see successful people and want what they have but don't want to do what they did. You must be willing to put in the work. There will be a lot of sleepless nights. There will be times when you're doing all the work because it's just you. Just stay positive and keep positive people around you because you will need them when you feel like giving up. Stay true to yourself and your vision. Lastly, make sure you have a support system.

7 Ways of Getting Your Customers to Say 'Wow'!

Just imagine. You have walked out of a shop or put down the phone after purchasing something and your immediate reaction is 'Wow!' How do you feel? Excited; satisfied; fulfilled ... eager to return and buy again?

Wouldn't it be great if you could get your customers to feel the same way about dealing with you?

Lots of small business owners (and not so small) seem to think that the customer is merely an interference. But how can you get your customers all pumped up and ready to do business with you again? I'll share some tips on exactly how you can get a "Wow!" response and show how it can positively impact your bottom line.

Get promising
These days, too many business seem reluctant to commit to anything. As a result, you walk away with a nagging doubt that nothing is going to happen and so the whole experience is not pleasant. What a refreshing change to get a business that provides firm promises on dates and times or opening hours. Can you provide a clear promise to your customers? Have a think about each aspect of your business and highlight all your 'promisables' in your sales and marketing stuff. One great tip-- under promise and over deliver. Promise delivery in seven days, knowing you can do it in three days. When the goods arrive four days before expected, that's a 'Wow' factor if there ever was one!
Important point -- if you can't deliver it, don't promise it!

Be a Tigger
Remember Tigger from Winnie the Pooh? He's all over the place, bouncing up and down with endless energy and enthusiasm. He just leaves his friends breathless! What a great person to be and do business with. Are you enthusiastic when you speak and deal with your customers? Are your staff brimming with enthusiasm? If you can't project an image which says, "I'm happy to be here," how can you expect your customers to feel differently? So, have a Tigger day every day!

First impressions
If you have a shop or office where customers visit you, what do your premises say about your business? Is it modern, fresh-looking, clean and tidy? Or is it worn, tired and generally looking run down? Like it or not, customers will judge you on what they see. They may say "Wow" but for all the wrong reasons!
A pot of paint and splash of colour can make all the difference, and it doesn't have to cost the earth (these DIY programmes have a lot to answer for!).

Be a problem solver
Despite all businesses believing they have great customer service, the fact is that the majority don't. The main reason is that when people complain, most feel that they have not been listened to and their problem has not been solved. Be a solver of problems-- quickly and efficiently. A motto -- 'Resolve to solve.'

Be their friend
I don't know about you, but I am a sucker for business owners who take their time to know me and recognise me when I next call or visit! The bond and the desire to do more business with those types of entrepreneurs is strong for me. Do you take time to build a relationship with all your key clients? Do you go out of your way to greet them when they next do business? As the saying goes, aim to turn strangers into friends and friends into customers.

Value for money
In this day and age of new technology and the hefty prices that go with it, the concept of giving great value is sometimes forgotten. Creating a 'Wow' moment can be as simple as giving a little bit extra, something unexpected. It doesn't have to be of huge value, it's genuinely the thought that counts. However, don't restrict this idea just to price. Price on its own may not work; it has to be tied in with something else-- 2 for 1, a small gift, etc.
The quality of your product must also reflect value for money. Don't try and pass off an inferior product with a superior price -- you'll, again, create, the wrong type of 'Wow' moment! Medium price and great quality-- a definite, positive 'Wow.'

Call them
The real killer 'Wow' is calling your customer a few days after he has bought. Asking him if the product is fine, whether it does what he wanted it to do, is one sure way of stopping him in his tracks! If everything is great, then you have a customer for life. If there is a problem, wonderful; you have the opportunity to put it right and...have a customer for life. This is a very simple and powerful way of creating 'Wow.'

So, that's it. If you follow these simple ideas, all your customers will be saying "Wow," and they will be coming back time and time again. Who knows? They may even tell their friends. Take some time to review these tips and see how you can apply them in your business.

Have you ever launched a marketing campaign yet it didn't yield the results you envisioned? Did you take the time to thoroughly research your campaign idea before executing it? Important elements to a sound campaign encompass identifying your product or service and your consumers.

The other day, I met with a client to discuss her upcoming marketing campaign. When I asked her to share her overall goals for this initiative, she looked at me bewildered and said, "I just want more sales."

Well, that's fine and dandy as we all want more sales, but to have a successful campaign, you must consider what your overall objectives are. Every successful marketing campaign begins with a plan. So, in the planning process, these four tools are essential:

Goals
Strategy
Time
Measure

Set SMART Goals
A common reason for a failed campaign is lack of commitment. Determine what your priorities are and then focus on them. Once you identify what goals you want to achieve, you need to find a way to review and measure progress. Some goals will take time to achieve, so it is important to measure your progress regularly. Try implementing SMART Goals into your planning. These are simple tools used by businesses to formulate an actionable plan for results. SMART illustrates the five characteristics of an efficient objective:

S- Specific
M- Measurable
A- Attainable
R- Realistic
T- Timely

Create a Strategy
What is the purpose of your marketing campaign? Creating a strategy involves anticipating the future outcome while making decisions in the present. Developing a strategy will help you stay on track with your goals while creating action steps to achieve them.

Make the Time
Have you considered the time it will take to manage your campaign? Time is the most common factor that needs to be incorporated in your campaign to prevent it from losing its effectiveness. So, as you plan your time, it should include the date your campaign will end.

As an example: "I want to increase widget sales by 20 percent between September and December."

Measure your Progress
How do you determine if your marketing campaign has succeeded or not? Measuring your progress is crucial! Why? It helps in evaluating your efforts and gauging how you are managing your budget.

So, what metrics are you going to use? Here are two that I am familiar with:

Google Analytics gives you rich insight into your website traffic and marketing effectiveness.
Social Report, a social network analytics solution, gives you rich insight into your social space and marketing effectiveness.

In conclusion, pre-planning your campaign allows you to target your market and track the results to determine your return on investment or (ROI).

A book, "The Leadership Challenge," was recently written that told the story of U.S. Army Major General John H. Stanford. Although Stanford flunked sixth grade, he got into college on a ROTC scholarship. He also served in Korea and Vietnam and ultimately became the superintendent of the Seattle Public Schools and took public education to a new level.

In the book, Stanford is quoted as saying:

"The secret to success [in life] is to stay in love. Staying in love gives you the fire to ignite other people, to see inside other people, to have greater desire to get things done than other people. A person who is not really in love doesn't really feel the kind of excitement that helps them get ahead and to lead others and to achieve. I don't know any other fire, any other thing in life that is more exhilarating and is more positive feeling than love is."

In other words, the secret to success is to stay in love. And to stay in love with your business so it will be more successful, here are a few things you should be doing:

Select businesses and product/service lines wisely. If you're choosing a new business to begin or choosing a new product/service line to launch (and all other things are equal), select the one you're the most passionate about, the one you truly love. Starting anything is very hard work; but if you love it, you'll have that extra fire that will help you succeed. Many people choose businesses and product/service lines only from a revenue or profit potential. However, if you choose based on what you love, you can get your clients/customers to love it, too. And as they say, the money will follow.
Designate your "likes" and "dislikes." To stay in love, you should be working on the parts of your business you love doing, not what you "like" doing and definitely not what you "dislike" doing. For example, if you're handling customer service problems, and you really don't like it, then stop! More than likely, you're not doing a good job at it anyway, and it's killing your energy which prevents you from performing great on the things you do love. Of course, this is easier said than done; as entrepreneurs, we need to wear many hats. However, if you fall out of love, the consequences will be terrible. So, make a list of three things you love doing and three things you don't. Then, make a genuine effort to stop doing the things you don't love doing (don't just ignore them though; find someone else who can do them).
Hire individuals you like. Of course, we all (ultimately) want the best employees, but what if that person is really annoying? I'm sure we've all had either an annoying co-worker or employee at some point, and these individuals negatively affect organizations. When you come to work daily, you want to be excited about seeing your team. And when you lose that excitement, your love of the business fades and so will your employees' love and eventually, your success.
Speak with others about your business. We've all heard the saying, "The grass is greener on the other side." As an entrepreneur, you probably sometimes think that other people have it easier than you. In actuality, everybody thinks everybody else's life is easier, and your life as a business owner is likely pretty good. So, talk to others about their jobs and businesses. You'll hear many people complaining about their bosses, their clients/customers, their employees, etc. Doing this will make you see that you do have it better than you think, and that will help you stay in love with your business.

Love is a very powerful emotion, and it gives us massive energy and allows us to fight well after when most people would have given up. And it's just what you need to be successful.

Recently, I was faced with a situation in which I hired and trusted a seemingly smart, professional and successful business woman, only to be let down drastically by her actions. What you see is really not always what you get. Though I've always been a good judge of character, I must admit, I let my guard down, which left me doing damage control.

Character is who we are even when no one is watching; it's doing the right thing! So, what attributes should one look for when hiring an Independent Contractor, partnering with other entrepreneurs or collaborating on a business project? These are 3 I's that every entrepreneur should possess.

Integrity
Do you believe integrity is important both personally and professionally? Integrity is the foundation that we all should strive to live by. It exhibits the quality of one's character! While morality is often associated with integrity, morality is what we believe while integrity is what we do with what we believe.

As an entrepreneur, integrity should be deeply rooted at inception of your business as it becomes the heart and soul of your company's culture. Ask yourself:

Is my business compatible with my values?
Am I sure that my success is not coming at the expense of my family, personal and professional relationships or health?
Do the vision of who I strive to be and the life I want to create fit the business decision I have just made?

Answering these questions can help you make adjustments where needed.

MW: When and why did you start your business?
Dominique: I started From A Writer's POV five years ago this past July. I was working on my first book, "Inspire me Young" and was looking for a network to market my book. I couldn't find one, so I created From A Writer's POV.

MW: Who is your target market?
Dominique: My target market is anyone in the literary field. Whether you are an author, writer, business owner that provides a service to authors and writers, etc. Anyone in the literary field is my target market.

MW: How did you become interested in the publishing industry?
Dominique: I love reading, I like writing, and then I became a published author. After publishing six books, I made mistakes, learned from some things and decided I wanted to be someone that helped people avoid certain mistakes.

MW: What are some of your future goals?
Dominique: My goals are to not only run and operate a magazine but to also run and operate a publishing company. [I also want to] be a successful mentor and consultant for authors and writers, giving them the encouragement they need to get to the next level of their literary careers.

MW: What tips/advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
Dominique: My advice is to research, do your homework, ask questions. DO NOT get intimidated by these other business owners who think they know it all and aren't trying to help you. They may talk the talk about being so big in the business, but their growl is worse than their bite. Don't get intimidated by this. There's room at the top for everyone. Stay focused on your dream. Stay on track with your goals and believe in yourself!

Sista Sense Power Circle Telesummit- Recap

As many of you know, LaShanda Henry, founder of SistaSense.com, Black Business Women Online and lots of other websites, held the first ever Sista Sense Power Circle Telesummit last Friday and Saturday. I wasn't able to attend all of the sessions, but the ones I heard were absolutely fabulous! I can't believe that we were able to get such valuable information for such a great price!

Think first class, be first class, invest first class.
Whatever you're doing, kick it up a notch. Now is not the time to be lazy!

What Nicki Minaj Taught Me About Business

On Sunday, in between working on some things, I took a little break to watch TV. On E!, there was a special about Nicki Minaj. Now, I don't particularly care for her music, but I think she's a very intriguing person, and I like to hear successful people's stories, so I decided to watch. And I must say, I was feeling pretty inspired and motivated after watching. There are a couple of lessons I took away:

1) After Nicki graduated from high school, she ultimately got a 9-to-5 job. But, what she really wanted to do was rap. She ended up getting fired from the job, but she said she couldn't go back to work at a "regular job" and didn't care if she had to live in a shelter, she was going to make her dream work. Period, point blank. That really struck me. Now, I'm not saying you need to be willing to live in a shelter to make your dreams come true, but you should be willing to make sacrifices and be persistent.
A lot of times, people think, 'Well, I'll go after my dreams for a little while, but if it doesn't work by this particular time, I'll find something else to do.' But, if you're really passionate about your dreams and goals, if you know that whatever you're trying to do is what you were put on earth to do, you don't quit. You find a way to make your dream work, no matter how long it takes. You work at it until. I think this is a very important lesson, particularly for entrepreneurs. It's easy to want to give up when you aren't getting the results you want quickly enough. However, it's important that you stay on the journey until you get to your destination.

2) Let's face it, Nicki Minaj is...~~weird~~ eccentric. On the special, she talked about how she's always had these different "personalities" and how she would sometimes speak with different accents. And as an artist, Nicki's clothes, hair and makeup are always interesting and eclectic. But, she is herself, she does her own thing, and that's one reason people love her and are drawn to her. And the same thing goes for entrepreneurs, you have to do you and be you. When you're authentic, people will be drawn to you and want to do business with you, and you'll feel great about yourself because you're allowing yourself to be the unique, fabulous person you are.

So, always remember to never, never, never give up on your dreams, and always be you!

Six Brown Chicks: Six Brown Chicks is a group of women that have joined forces to blog daily on Chicagonow.com, a Tribune-owned media property.

MW: When and why did you start it?
SBC: We started our blog on February 1, 2011. We formed the Six Brown Chicks becuase we have our networks dedicated to enlightening women, and we decided that we could make a bigger impact if we collaborated our passions and blog every day as one entity, the Six Brown Chicks.

MW: How did you become interested in blogging?
SBC: We are all authors, and blogging was a natural progression for us, as it provides the opportunity for instant feedback with our readers. It's been amazing to speak to those women who are unable to voice their innermost concerns or dilemmas with the honesty and candor that blogging allows.
        Each of us became interested in blogging for various reasons, but collectively, we are able to write freely about subject matters that we are passionate about. We write specifically to empower others to achieve success at work and at home and in their relationships.

MW: What do you hope readers take away after reading your blog?
SBC: We discuss divorce, rape, bullying on the job, the uncomfortable conversations that everyday women would love to have and not be judged about.
       We are bold in that we share personal experiences with the hope of connecting with others who may be in similar situations.
       We want our readers to walk away knowing that of the six of us, one of us is just like you or maybe all of us are. The universal sisterhood is real, and we want women to know this: You're not alone.
        We also hope that it will begin the much needed converstaion about the various topics that we discuss.

MW: What are some of your future goals?
SBC: Collectively, our future goal is a nationally syndicated talk show where we can reach the women who are not online, and we're working towards that. Individually, we all have various career goals that we continuously strive to achieve; we have a playwright, an empowerment coach, relationship columnists, editor and a spoken word artist in our little group.

MW: Who and what inspires you?
SBC: The love for women, all women, all ages, all shades, inspires us. That yearning for the YaYa Sisterhood, the village of nurturing, friendship and support inspires us.

MW: What do you love most about owning your own business?
SBC: We love the daily challenge of getting the good word out to the masses. It's like a wake-up call to arms for women; we love this, the everyday hustle to connect. We are excited about the many possibilities that the future holds, and we want our readers to recognize the boundless possibilities for them as well.

MW: What's your favorite inspirational quote/saying?

SBC: Do your research! Location is key. Delegate-- don't take on every role, even if you feel comfortable with the task, you want to avoid burning yourself out. Mocha Writer: What is Pavo|Nyne?
Issa: Pavo|Nyne is a platform that promotes the emerging urban arts and lifestyle. Often times, urban arts are not given their just exposure as bonafide artistic representation of an ever evolving culture and lifestyle-- more specifically, that of an urban demographic. Pavo|Nyne specializes in unearthing emerging urban artists and trends within this culture and sharing them via Pavo|Nyne's blog. Pavo|Nyne also serves as a springboard for art writing, personal art advising, independent curating and art business consulting.

MW: When and why did you start your business?
Issa: I formally started my business in Spring 2011 after nearly three years of art blogging, continually working in arts administration and freelance writing. Pavo|Nyne was conceived out of a desire to serve the incredibly vast yet, seemingly unearthed emerging urban arts community-- both the artists and the art lovers. For so long, the urban art's public identity amongst (particularly) people of color has not yet expanded beyond the local or festival artisan vendor. My hope is that Pavo|Nyne will contribute to galvanizing this quite special archiving of urban culture and propelling it to a more accessible and widely celebrated genre of creative expression and global experience.

MW: Who is your target market?
Issa: Our target market is the progressive, upward-mobile participants and/or appreciators of the growing, creatively conscious demographic of people of color.

MW: How did you become interested in art?
Issa: Art has been around me all of my life. As a child, even my nursery books, building blocks, flash cards, etc. were pieces of art. My parents took great pride in ensuring my sister and I were consistently being exposed to very beautiful and vivid depictions of people of color and their cultures.
        Also, my parents included my sister and I in the purchasing of art. In middle school was the first time I purchased a piece of art from a gallery. It is a pencil sketching of an actress who was to be depicted in a Porgy & Bess stage play poster from the Harlem Renaissance period. The experience and
the art itself are both priceless to me.

MW: Who and what inspires you?
Issa: Wow, where do I start and how could I ever end?! (lol): Erykah Badu, Zadie Smith, Shabazz Palaces, Ancient Kemet, Mythology, Nancy Wilson, Gris Gris Lab, West African craftsmanship, Sub-Saharan African architecture, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Mariyamah Hill, Harriet Tubman, Eartha Kitt and just about anything or anyone that embraces its own unique divine design. I love people, places, things and ideas that foster authenticity. That inspires me.

MW: What do you love most about owning your own business?
Issa: I love that I get to live out my very own vision. They say be the change you want to see in the world, and that is precisely what I am granting myself permission to both be and do. It's affirming that when you step out of the matrix and follow your own divine path, the universe has a way of acknowledging your sincere efforts and in return, supports you in good measure. It may not appear so delightful at first, but anything worth having is worth praying, preparing and proclaiming for.

MW: What are some of your future goals?
Issa: I am quite interested in the healing attributes of the arts. I would love to study holistic health and the healing arts and perhaps integrate these learnings into a practice of holistic arts healing of some sort. I am opening up myself to graduate level offerings in both of these areas. Also, I would like to have a family and live near nature and some sort of body of water. (lol)-- Had to add that one in there, too!

MW: What is your favorite inspirational quote/saying?
Issa: "If the dream does not inspire you, then the nightmare will."
          This saying reminds me to keep a balanced view of what I am doing and why I am doing it. It also brings to mind how it's quite possible to make the most out of ANY situation. It's a stark look on inspiration, which is very important to us as artists, but it's the truth. Find your flow and go! No excuses.

MW: What tips/advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
Issa: Be clear about your motive(s) for creating your own business.
         Familiarize yourself with your industry's leaders, trends and economic climate.
         Know your niche, and flaunt it!
         Network and market in a way that is compatible with your strengths either as a writer, speaker, social media guru, etc.
         Love yourself througout this very pivotal time of both professional development and personal growth. (It is guaranteed that you will be stretched outside of your comfort zone at some point. The boss needs a friend, too!).
         Don't be afraid to hire help in business areas that you are not familiar with. (However, be slow to hire and quick to fire).
         Set goals and maintain a sense of responsibility and ownership for your efforts.
         And lastly: ENJOY yourself! Surely you didn't become an entrepreneur to feel like a slave again. Starting your own business is a feat, but the bigger picture should always be to have a quality of life EVERYDAY!

The Power of Vision

My 2011 Vision Board

Yesterday, my friend, Shiketa Morgan, had this as her Facebook status: Have u tried closing your eyes and visualizing what you want in your life? If you've already been there in your mind...it's going to manifest.

If you know me or have read any of my blog posts (here or on For Colored Gurls), I'm sure you know that I'm a firm believer in visualization. Not only do I close my eyes to visualize, I also have a couple of vision boards, and I take time every night to write a 'script', writing and visualizing how I want the next day to go. And I can tell you that it has really worked for me. Some examples (large and small): I've been able to visualize winning a contest (and won), I've had money for things I needed when I needed it, and I've imagined myself as more positive and less stressed (and it's been working for the most part).

Two of the main keys to attaining your desires through visualization is 1) Feeling good and positive about the things you want; and 2) believing and expecting it to happen.

If you're not exactly sure how to visualize effectively, here are a few tips:

Be clear. Before you even begin to visualize, you need to get clear about what it is you truly desire. One thing I visualize about, of course, is my business. I am clear about the fact that I want to assist more people, assist more clients, improve my skills and increase brand awareness. Since I know exactly what I want, I'm able to create a more clear picture in my head.
Really visualize. When you visualize, make sure that you are as detailed as possible. For example, when I'm visualizing about my business, I imagine happily working on projects and recording profits, I see myself talking on the phone with clients, and I see myself in a fabulous home office. Try to feel, smell, hear and see everything you can-- doing this should make you feel excited about what's to come.
Create a vision board. On your board (or slideshow), you can put pictures of the things you want (like a particular amount of money or an affirmation) or images of people you admire and want to be like. Combining this with imagining your desires can really help.

It may (or may not) take you a long time to see results, but you definitely will. Just give it some time; you'll get there!

How do you expect me to get health insurance?

A Resource for the Unemployed/Underemployed/Self-employed.

Okay, friends! Acquiring health insurance, or shall I say my inability to acquire health insurance has been a huge obstacle since being let go of my last 9-to-5 job in 2010. Now that I am self-employed, I am finding that there aren't as many services/resources available to individuals whose income level is above the poverty line.

Well, with all due respect, I haven't quite hit the Forbes List yet! So, I can't imagine how the government (or anyone else) could expect that I would be able to afford standard monthly insurance premiums of over $300 to cover my personal health insurance costs. And strangely enough, even while I was receiving unemployment benefits, I was STILL deemed as ineligible for state-funded resources because my income was too high! [Pardon me as I chuckle about that...What an oxymoron]. Beyond this, exploring the option of adding coverage for my husband would be double the standard monthly premium noted above, and that is just outlandish!

Now, I must say that for many persons in my position, they do qualify for state-funded health coverage, primarily because they have dependent children. Subsequently, I certainly have to give the government credit for wanting to ensure that the children, the disabled and the elderly are provided with health coverage. My husband and I, however, do not have dependent children, we are not disabled and are nowhere near elderly! LOL! And with more and more couples choosing to start families much later in their relationships, this scenario of working adults without dependent children is becoming increasingly common.

My husband is an independent contractor. His company once offered benefits, but they terminated those benefits because of the rising costs. Now, everyone employed at his company is responsible for acquiring his or her own health care and other benefits. So, with neither one of us being connected to a company that offers benefits, we've been facing major obstacles with trying to maintain our health. Fortunately for us, we have not had any major medical issues to arise. But, needless to say, there is certainly a gap in the health care system for us folks whose income is above the poverty level and don't have dependent children. I anticipate that the new Health Care Reform Act may address some of this. But, in the meantime, we have to do something. So, I have continued to be proactive and vigilant about getting health insurance.

Many other people generally resolve to go without coverage because they simply cannot afford it. Well, for those of you in a similar situation such as mine, I am here to pass on some encouragement. So, don't fret! It has definitely taken me a long while, but I believe that I have finally identified substantial resources for those of us who are unemployed/underemployed/or self-employed and do not qualify for Medicaid, Medicare and other state-funded benefits. Check out these resources below:

a. Kaiser Permanente Bridge Program. The Bridge Plan is for individuals who find they can't afford health coverage but aren't eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, medical assistance programs or other health care coverage. Members pay a low monthly premium (starting at approximately $20/month) for up to three years of enrollment, as long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements. Kaiser Permanente covers between 90 and 95 percent of the cost for standard monthly premiums.
b. National Association for the Self-Employed. The NASE offers access to health insurance through Assurant, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, UnitedHealthOne, Humana and others. These respected companies offer a variety of health plans, which can be customized to meet the special needs of micro-business owners. With several companies offering customizable health options, there's a plan for everyone. You must be a registered member in order to access these benefits. The annual membership fee is $72.
c. Foundation of Health Coverage Education. The FHCE offers four unique ways to help you find health coverage in your area, including an 800- number that uninsured persons can use to speak directly with a live counselor 24 hours a day/seven days a week.
d. Aflac. While major medical pays your doctors and hospitals, Aflac is a supplemental insurance that pays you directly any time you are hurt or sick. Aflac does not replace major medical and serves as a complement to your primary health coverage. However, you are able to obtain Aflac regardless of whether you have primary medical or not. Once you enroll, you get cash benefits to help with daily living activities any time you are sick or injured. The cash you receive can be used however you'd like such as for utilities, rent/mortgage, prescriptions, high deductibles, groceries, etc. Aflac is also a great way for small/micro-business owners to enhance their benefits packages. Aflac is no direct cost to the business owner because it is 100 percent employee paid. Plus, employers also get a tax break. (Read more via the postings on my Facebook fan page).

Mocha Writer: What is Sweet Justice?
LaKeitha: Sweet Justice is a "cakery" that specializes in traditional and gourmet cakes and cupcakes made of the freshest ingredients and in fun and exciting combinations. Our cupcakes are custom-ordered and baked in small batches to preserve our quality and improve your cupcake experience!

MW: When and why did you start your business?
LaKeitha: I started my business in October of 2009. I had been practicing law for six years, and until the summer of 2009, was working at what many consider to be a "golden" job as in-house counsel at a Fortune 500 company. One day, after a year of layoffs (many executed by yours truly, unfortunately), my number came up. So, I took my severance package and went on a two week vacation to Spain. Maybe in my own private version of "Eat, Pray, Love," I came back with this renewed energy to get in the kitchen. So, I started cooking for free and taking it to friends. The response was so good [that] someone suggested I start baking as a business. And that's how Sweet Justice was born!

MW: Who do you cater to?
LaKeitha: I cater to anyone and everyone who loves a great tasting cupcake (or cake). We love doing custom designs for moms-to-be or brides and even kids' parties.

MW: How and when did you become interested in baking?
LaKeitha: When I was younger, my godmother used to bake with me all the time. I remember my first cake was a bunny rabbit covered in coconut for Easter! Also, my great aunt Dorothy is the cake lady (and matriarch) of our family. She sends pound cake to everyone for their birthdays every year, and she is 86! I grew up thinking, 'I want to be the cake lady one day!'
     So, growing up and in college, I would bake when I was sad. Boyfriend made me sad, everyone had cookies. Got a bad grade, cupcakes all around. Eventually, as the years went by, I realized that when I baked (even out of sadness), it made other people HAPPY! So, I stopped baking only when I was sad and did it just to bring smiles to people's faces.

MW: What are your specialty items or flavors?
LaKeitha: Our signature flavor is Chocolate Covered Strawberry, which is a strawberry cake made with fresh strawberries and topped with Belgian White Chocolate. We also have your traditional red velvet, chocolate and vanilla, but our newest fun flavor is Peanut Butter & Jelly! It is awesome!

MW: What are some of your future goals?
LaKeitha: I'd like to open a brick-and-mortar where people can come and enjoy as little or as much of Sweet Justice as they would like! I also want to be a resource to other people who, like me, start out knowing absolutely NOTHING about starting a baking business. I'd also like to be the personal baker to the President of the United States (don't look like that! It's possible!).

MW: Who and what inspires you?
LaKeitha: People who strike out on their own and do what they love and become a huge success! I NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER wanted to be an entrepreneur. I always thought I would "work for the man" and just draw a check every two weeks. But, I was always in awe of those who worked for themselves and made a real business out of doing what they loved. So, now that I have totally shifted gears, I look at all the people around me who are starting financial businesses, bakeries, catering companies and more, and I am literally in awe of the talent that my colleagues have. I'm also inspired by the ability of these folks to step out on faith and go after their dreams. And I'm right behind them!

MW: What do you love most about owning your own business?
LaKeitha: Waking up to do what I love every day. If I have to wake up at 4 A.M. to start a major order, or go to bed at 3 A.M. after a long day, I know that whatever I sent out the door is going to make a customer happy and that I'm the one who reaps the benefit for all my hard work. Oh, and most of all, I LOVE my flexibility. I control my own schedule and can make decisions on how hard and how long I want to work each day. Being your own boss definitely is sweet (no pun intended).

MW: What is your favorite inspirational quote or saying?

MW: What tips/advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
LaKeitha: First, don't hesitate, and JUST DO IT! If you have a great, novel idea or just something you are passionate about, jump into it! I'm not saying quit your good, full-time, benefit-having 9-5 gig. But, start planting seeds that can take root and grow months or years down the line.
     Second, find yourself a good support system. Whether it's friends or family, you will always need people you can trust to bounce ideas off and to help you look at things from different perspectives.
     Lastly, SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! Real talk, it is HARD to start a business with no money. If you know you want to start a business, save your pennies! Fortunately, when I started working years ago, I saved as much as I could out of each pay check, not knowing that one day, I would need to live on it while I started my business. Even if you didn't have the money saved up, figure out how to live on less now so that you can have more later. Cut down the cable, eat out less, streamline all excess spending. It is super hard (especially for a shopaholic like me), but when you see the fruits of your labor, it will all be worth it.

June is Rebuild Your Life Month! Here are some fabulous tips on how to rebuild and reinvent your business:

When we think of the word "reinvention," most of us think of a BIG, flashy change. With hit TV shows like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, we're a society that LOVES the "big unveil." But, in business and in real life, the best results come from strategic and deliberate action.

Think about those great ideas you have, just sitting on the backburners of your mind. You want to makeover your brand, but you just can't afford to hire a designer right now. Or, maybe you know your fulfillment processes are a nightmare, but you're so swamped that you just need to get by for a little bit longer. You don't have to unearth your business in order to make these changes happen. If you choose one area to work on at a time, you'll eventually start to see a shiny new version of your business appear.

Let's take a look at THREE easy ways you can reinvent your business. They might not be high drama, but they'll likely get you dramatic results.

1. Change Your Target Market. If you cast a wide net when you first started your business, it might be time to focus on a specific niche. With the amount of information flying around on the Internet, Smart Phones, etc., your typical consumer doesn't have the time or mental bandwith to decide to like you or not like you-- unless you have something they specifically need. As a business owner, the best way to grab their attention is by meeting a specific, targeted demand.
       For example, a Virtual Assistant will probably have more success targeting work-from-home entrepreneurs and startups versus any and all businesses. And a copywriter who specializes in writing for Internet Marketers will probably be a top choice for a new blogger or online marketer.

2. Change your Model. Look at your product or service, and think creatively about some new ways you could offer your expertise in the market.
       If you're a coach or consultant and tired of doing one-on-ones, it could be time to start group coaching. Remember, this doesn't have to be dramatic. You could start with a group as small as three, and expand slowly and steadily. Once you get into a groove with doing small workshops, you could even take things a step further by developing a curriculum based on your live lectures and turning it into a packaged home-study program. All of a sudden, you're a coach/consultant with live workshops and products to offer.
       Don't underestimate how powerful this one little change can be for your business. You can substantially increase your income this way. A great example of a model shift: One of my Millionaire Protege Club's Diamond members, Ciara Daykin, took her wedding planning business up to the six-figure mark. Then, after incorporating coaching into her model, her revenues blasted up into the multiple six-figures. She just wrote me recently to share her business had surpassed the MILLION dollar mark! And this all happened in the span of three years in which she was in my programs.

3. Change your marketing. It may be time to change your message. Pick a bold angle, and go with it. Appeal to a new sense, and adapt your message to the current climate. Customers usually appreciate a change of pace from the norm now and then -- and if they don't, they're usually not shy about telling you what they think. And, you can use their feedback to keep honing your messaging until it's just right.
       Or, you can also change the vehicle you use to deliver your message. Many online marketers are so used to using the Internet to promote their businesses that they completely ignore effective print marketing campaigns. A published article in your local print newspaper, a postcard or brochure mailing or an ad in a regional glossy magazine still goes a long way when it comes to introducing your business to new leads.
       When it comes to online media, you have plenty of options to choose from. For instance, you could announce your new product in a video and send it to your list instead of sending your usual email blast. Or, offer a free MP3 download to incentivize people to buy your product instead of the usual coupon.

4 Ways a Copywriter Can Benefit Your Business

Business is all about communication-- communication with your prospects and your clients and customers. It's very important that you stay on people's minds so you can ultimately make more profits.

Here are four ways a copywriter can benefit your business and help you communicate with your audience:

1. Enhance your online image. If you tell someone about your business, more than likely, the first thing they're going to check out is your website. Of course, you can write your own copy for your site, but will it be professional, efficient and free of spelling and grammar errors? A copywriter will make sure that your website's content is the absolute best it can be.
Also, copywriters can help make your site sticky with articles or even a business blog. Constantly having fresh and relevant content for your clients and customers will keep them coming back for more. Think of it like this: If your business is the first one that comes to a customer's mind when she has a question, how likely do you think she is to use you when it's time to buy the kind of product or service you're selling?

2. Assist you in implementing ideas you've been putting off. If you're a solopreneur (i.e., wear all the hats in your business), you probably stay plenty busy with the day-to-day aspects of your business. 5 Tips for Reinventing Your Life

June is Rebuild Your Life Month! And one way to rebuild your life is to reinvent yourself. There comes a time when we want to make changes for the better; however, we may not be exactly sure how to go about doing so. Well, no worries. Here are five tips to help:

Determine what's not working. The first step to take when it comes to changing your life is to be aware of what's going on in it. So, create a list of the things that aren't working and the people/situations holding you back. Keep in mind that when you're doing this, you need to be completely honest with yourself. Additionally, devise a plan to eliminate those things.
Make YOU your top priority. I know, as women, it can be difficult to do this, especially if you have a spouse and children. But, you have to learn how to put others to the side, and do what's best for you. If you don't take responsibility for you and your well being, who will?
Dream big. Y'all know I'm a huge advocate of dreaming big; and, of course, it's something I do all the time. Whether your dream is to be a work-at-home mom or the owner of several boutiques, remember, if you can dream it, you can do it. Believe it!
Learn to let go. Many times, it's more simple to get rid of a few small tasks instead of tackling one huge new task. Getting rid of a few tasks will make room for all the other things you've been wanting to do.
Begin your evolution. In other words, do something! Whatever it is you want to do-- start a business, write a book or change careers-- start on it today!

National Small Business Week 2011

Each year since 1963, the President of the U.S. has proclaimed National Small Business Week to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America. As a part of this week, the U.S. Small Business Association acknowledges the special impact made by outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners.

This year, National Small Business Week will honor the estimated 27.2 million small businesses in America because they are major contributors to the strength of our economy. Check out these facts about small businesses in the U.S.:

To be considered a small business, there must be fewer than 500 employees.
Firms with fewer than 500 employees represent 99.9 percent of all businesses in the U.S.
More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business.
Small businesses create 60-80 percent of new jobs in this country.
52 percent of U.S. businesses are home-based.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

One of my goals for this year was to really step my game up when it comes to my business and blog, For Colored Gurls. Doing this has required me to step out of my comfort zone which hasn't been the easiest thing because I'm a person who loooves stability. Some things I've done so far:

I recently learned the importance of putting my face and business out there and letting people know what I have to offer. The reason I hadn't really done so before is because I didn't want to be obnoxious or for people to think I was conceited or something. But, I realized I had to promote myself because no one else is going to, and I realized there is an art to selling oneself in an appropriate way. So, while it was a little weird for me initially, I'm getting used to it now.
I recently created two YouTube channels (one for Mocha Writer and one for FCG), and I created a BlogTalk Radio Show for FCG. Now, anyone who knows me knows I'm not much of a talker; I'd much rather write than speak. But, since I really want to expand beyond just writing, reach a larger audience and develop my brands, I did what I had to do. I'm not 100 percent comfortable with this just yet, but I'm sure I'll get there.
Yesterday, I attended my first ever Chamber of Commerce event (I just became a member). I'll be honest: When my friend invited me, I wasn't sure I would go. I've been to a few networking events, but the majority of the attendees were people who were similar to me, but this was completely different, and I didn't feel that I would feel comfortable in that setting. However, one of my goals is start attending more networking/business events, so I went and actually had a good time.

My point is that if we want to learn, grow our businesses and develop ourselves, we have to learn to step out of our comfort zones-- at least a little. For most of us, starting a business was not something we were exactly comfortable doing, but we did it anyway. And I think to keep our businesses going and thriving, we have to continue to take risks and try things that may initally seem a little scary or do things we never thought we would. And after you do those things, you'll likely realize two things: 1) It wasn't really that big of a deal; and 2) You're a better person for it because you tried something new and different.

How do you step out of your comfort zone? Don't think about too much and just do it. Of course, create a plan first (if necessary), but after you do that, just go ahead. Because if you think about it too much, you might start thinking, "What if this bad thing happens?", psych yourself out and not do anything at all. Also, I suggest sharing your new venture with others. That way, you'll feel like you have to do it because if you don't, people will find you untrustworthy (and that's bad for business). For example, when I decided I wanted to do a radio show, I came up with a date, asked the guest if she could do it, scheduled the show and started promoting it. Now, I can't not do it because it'll make me look bad and like a liar if I don't. Putting a date on your project makes you accountable for doing what you said you would do when you said you would do it.

Whatever your dreams and goals are, take it to the next level and make it great by stepping out of your comfort zone! You won't be disappointed.

It's May! Here are my goals for this month:

I successfully earn the income I want!
I continue working to make Mocha Writer and For Colored Gurls the best they can be!
I get two more sponsors on FCG!
I get 1,275 likers on FCG's FB and 410 in MW's FB!
I increase the number of visits, page views and blog subscribers on FCG!
I successfully attract clients that allow my income to increase!
I successfully launch FCG's radio show, and it's a hit!
I remain positive and at peace during any and all situations and circumstances!
I consistently live in a state of peace, happiness and great expectation!
I am free from procrastination! I do what needs to be done when it needs to be done by staying focused on what I want to achieve!

I was trying to think of a topic to write about today, so I decided to look through some interesting articles I had torn out of old magazines. I came across one from the November 2008 issue of ESSENCE (don't judge me lol), and the article was called "Yes You Can!" In it, there's a little section with tips on how to increase your odds of accomplishing any goal you have. Keep reading to find out how:

Write it down. Say and write your goals in terms that are affirmative, real and tangible. Saying, "I make great profits from my business" is less effective than saying, "I make $2,000 per month from my business."
Say it aloud. According to Pastor Creflo A. Dollar, each time you speak, you're planting seeds in your heart and setting events in motion.
Make it measurable. "I'm going to network more," is not as attainable as "I will network two hours per week online and attend one networking event per month.
Take small steps. Yes, turning your business into a million dollar enterprise might be your ultimate goal, but you need to break it down into steps you can take in your spare time or on the weekends.
Get support. But be selective about who you get it from. According to Valerie Burton, sharing your goals with people who encourage you can be powerful.
Drop and add. Have you outgrown any goals that you had years ago? Get rid of 'em! Let go of the old, and embrace the new!

If you own your own business, I'm sure you know that stress can be a common occurrence in your life. And while a little stress is okay and can even be beneficial, too much of it can have not-so-great effects on you.

Stress can cause headaches and migraines, fatigue, sleep problems, sadness, depression and a lack of motivation.

Since April is Stress Awareness Month, here are 25 tips to help you lessen your stress so you can focus on taking your business to the next level:

Divide up household responsibilities with your family.
Exercise regularly.
Get enough sleep.
Eat healthy foods and a balanced diet.
Stay away from negative people and situations as much as possible.
Get massages (either professional or from your spouse/partner).
Organize, and use your time wisely.
Talk with friends or family about your thoughts, goals and fears.
Learn to say "no" to things that will make you feel overwhelmed.
Take regular breaks to relax and rest.
Pray.
Meditate.
Do yoga.
Journal (vent your feelings, and write down things you're grateful for).
Keep a flexible schedule.
Try to maintain a clear boundary between work and personal life.
Prioritize, and plan your day before it begins (the night before or in the morning before you start working).

5 Ways to Stay Healthy as an Entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, you probably have a lot going on: working on your business, marketing, doing the work for your clients/customers, spending time with your family and friends, making time for yourself, etc. And because you have a lot going on, you may find that living a healthy lifestyle is the last thing on your mind. Well, it shouldn't be. If you're not taking care of yourself, it's going to be very difficult for you to handle everything else you have going on in your life.

With that said, here are five tips to help you become healthier:

Schedule time to work out. Exercise is essential when it comes to keeping your body healthy and your immune system strong. Doing aerobic and strength-building exercises consistently will help you feel more alert and keep your energy levels stable, which helps you do your best work and can directly impact your success. If you have to, write "work out" on your calendar or in your planner so you know it's a part of the day's activities (that's what I do).
Eat a balanced diet. Trust me, I know how hard it is to do this. It's a lot easier to grab a burger or candy bar when you're hungry, especially if your day is super busy. But, for your health, it's important that your diet is balanced. As much as possible, eat whole foods, vegetables and lean meats. And for snacks, try fruit, nuts like almonds or pretzels.
Get the essential vitamins and minerals. These are important when it comes to maintaining your bodily functions and enhancing your health overall. If it's hard for you to get the recommended intake through natural sources (fruits and vegetables), think about supplementing your diet with vitamin pills.
Stress less. This can be easier said than done, but stress over long periods of time can have serious adverse effects on your mind and body. Ways to avoid and/or lessen stress include a nice walk, meditation, exercise and yoga; any activity that relaxes you and takes your mind off of whatever is stressing you should work.
Get enough sleep. Ideally, your body needs between seven and eight hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep to function properly and help you stay alert.

7 Tips for Writing Website Copy

As an entrepreneur, I'm sure you have a website. And if you have a website, I'm almost certain that that's where a lot of your clients/customers find you, especially if your business is solely online. Because of this, it is vital that the copy on your website is fabulous.

Here are seven tips to help:

Don't use too much copy. When someone visits your website, they don't want to have to scroll on and on and on to get your message. People are impatient and want to know what your business can do for them, and they want to know quickly. So, make sure you're not putting too many words on one page, and be as concise as possible. In other words, get your point across quickly!
Keep it simple. When you're writing content for your site, keep your audience in mind. You want them to understand what your business is about; so, if you must use industry terms, make sure you explain them. Also, keep your sentences short, and use paragraphs (i.e., blocks of text). Do not make one really long paragraph; no one is going to read all that.
Don't use all caps (or lots of exclamation points). I know this is probably a no-brainer for most of you, but hey, someone may need to read this. Writing everything in caps and using five exclamation points makes people think you're yelling at them, and that's no bueno. In my opinion, the only time you should use all caps is when you're saying something is FREE, a SPECIAL OFFER or something like that.
Use words that will make people want to buy. These include words like effective, exclusive, guaranteed, benefit and quality. For more words to use, check out this blog post.
Write like you're talking to a person one-on-one. In other words, use the word "you" when addressing your audience. This makes it more personal for them and makes them feel you're an actual person as opposed to just a business.
Sell the benefits. If you want to sell your products and services, you have to write about the benefits of using them instead of their features. What's the difference? A feature describes your product, while a benefit is what the user gets from it. So, for instance, I could write: "A press release is an announcement sent to the media to let them know what's going on with your business." That's the feature. The benefit could be: "Press releases increase the visibility of your website and increase your credibility with search engines." Essentially, you need to tell your customers how your product will improve their lives and/or businesses.
Edit, edit, edit. You want to be sure that your copy is grammatically correct, that there are no spelling errors, that everything flows smoothly and that everything is consistent. Having errors can cause you to lose credibility with your audience, and in turn, can cause you to lose clients-- and money. With that said, be sure you (or someone else) go through your copy a few times before publishing it.

April 2011 Goals!

Well, April is here, and that means it's time for some new goals. I did pretty good on my March goals and even exceeded some: I received two more sponsors for this month, and I exceeded the number of likers on my Facebook pages that I wanted.

So, my goals this month are (written as affirmations, of course):

I successfully earn the money I want this month!

I continue working on Mocha Writer and For Colored Gurls, making them the best they can possibly be!

I secure three more advertisers for FCG for May!

I successfully launch FCG's radio show!

I successfully increase the exposure of MW and FCG!

I have 1200 "likers" on FCG's Facebook page, and 400 on MW's Facebook page!

I increase the numbers of visits and page views on FCG, and I increase the number of newsletter subscribers!

I do fabulous work with my current clients!

I attract new clients that allow my income to increase!

I stay focused and in the present moment, which brings me great joy!

I trust God 100 percent to supply all my needs!
