A Better Me: A 52 Week Challenge

I am lost in transition. I am in a period in my life where there is so much I want to do, goals I NEED to accomplish, just things that I need to do to make sure I am working towards being the BEST that I can be! It's so easy for me to get caught up in the happenings of life I forget what really matters. ME. I matter. With being a mom, daughter, friend, essentially that ONE person that everyone depends on, put their burdens on and the leader in most things, it can be kind of overwhelming. Then something happens. It becomes redundant; I get sad/depressed and stuck in a rut until it is time to do it all over again. I NEEDED to do something about it. I was tired of feeling the same old defeated way. I was bored, confused, distracted and just freaking tired.

Yes, I was scared. Terrified that yes, I wanted all these changes, I had all these goals, and yet I had no idea how I was ever going to fit them into my busy life, much less accomplish them. I have NO discipline! I have a real problem with discipline. The last goal I had completely went kaput! I told myself that I was going to break the habit of cursing ( I sometimes curse like a sailor; don't judge me), yet I called the blog owner a bitch (I just talk to her like that) before the goal was even two minutes old. Yeah, I was a real winner. What in the Fudge Popsicle stick (seeee, I'm trying) was I going to do? I can't just make a goal, say that I am going to do it and NOT stick to it. I do that ALL the time. I was tired of disappointing myself. So what did I do???

So, I spoke to my friend who I'll call Christine (which, by the way, is her real name) and told her my feelings, my thoughts, my fears. Like the good friend that she is, she told me like it was. She said, "Yahna, you know what your problem is? You just don't know how to do you. Just do you." Sounds simple, right? Not. I understood the concept; however, to actually adhere to it was going to be the problem. How do I do this "JUST DOING ME CRAP?" Then, something happened.

She was settling with her boyfriend and was unhappy. She was the adult in the relationship, and he was the child. Great guy in the sense of how he treated and loved her, but I guess there is more to a relationship than love. Her relationsihp proved it, especially when it started to break her spirit. Relationships shouldn't break your spirit, but heck, it was starting to show. This girl was very strong, very independent, a mother, a hustler, a go-getter, a diva, smart, funny, sexy, yet when looking at her, I saw me.

Just like me, she was lost. Getting trapped in everyday happenings of life, we forget. There is so much we have to be and live up to that before we even do for ourselves, the hesitation, guilt and fear settles in, and we stop. Just like that, we get defeated. While taking a break from life on my friend's couch instead of my therapist's (which I have yet to get, any suggestions?), BAM; it hit me. I had an A-HA moment while I was writing down my list of goals that I might or might not accomplish. Why not try to accomplish our goals, which happened to be the same but different all together? Great idea, right? Yeah. DUH! What better way to accomplish a goal other than with the help of a friend? Until...

Why try to accomplish all these goals at once? Not only would it be very hard to complete, but it can essentially become VERY boring, very overwhelming and super boring. No one likes boring. You can spruce it up so many ways, but when you have the symptoms of being an ADHD adult like me, you better mix that shit up (I'm trying-- *shrugs*). Being the super smart person that I am (totally being facetious, though I am totally smart), I figured why not make this a weekly challenge? We had enough goals to last until the APOCALYPSE, so why not at least go for it before the world ends. A whole 52 weeks of just focusing on YOU. Jump in with two feet on the ground. No turning back. No regrets. I mean, seriously, what is the worst that can happen? Absolutely NOTHING! (By the way, if you thought that something could go wrong with this, you are totally being negative. Stop it!).

Was organized our goals. Separated them into categories of spiritual, health, finances, relationships and miscellaneous (don't ask). We numbered our goals and listed them by importance, which, of course, was pretty hard because they are ALL equally important. Then, we had the daunting task of actually figuring out our main focus point. DOING US. DOING ME. So, we got the list together, and every week, we will focus on a new task and the following week, we would not only focus on a new goal but continue to stack our focus on the previous goal. I think it's a great idea. Don't you? Every six weeks, there will be a free week where we can monitor our progress and do something fun and entertaining. I think this DOING ME challenge will be great.

What better way to change your life than on a Monday morning when it's totally UNEXPECTED?  You can follow this blog where every week, I will list each goal, and I will check in with you to tell you my progress, what worked and what didn't. Though because my life is very colorful, I'm pretty sure there will be some crazy stories, but hey, we are friends, right? Don't judge me, and I won't judge you. The cool thing about this is every week, you can tailor the goal to fit you. For instance, the first goal for this week is to...
Week 1: Praying- Focus on putting GOD first and including him in everything.
Challenge: Try praying more, reading scriptures, writing down thoughts that motivate you. You will need it in the upcoming weeks!
You may not be into religion or church, whatever floats your boat. But, there is something you may need to work on spiritually. Use this week to figure out what it is. Until next week = )

Mocha Writer: What is Right-Hand Mrs.?
Oneka Bady: Right-Hand Mrs. is an Administrative Consulting Firm that provides custom-tailored administrative and managerial packages to professionals in the hair and beauty industries.

MW: When and why did you start your business?
I started Right-Hand Mrs. in December 2010. I worked solely with one hair stylist from August 2010 until December 2010 as her personal assistant. When I started, I knew that she was a very successful stylist who was by-appointment only and traveled between two states, servicing clients. What I didn't know was that she would stay up until 4 A.M. every night doing back office tasks, all after being in the salon for 12 hours. She would be exhausted and was getting burned out. I saw a need in an industry that was barely touched and dove right in.

MW: Who is your target market?
Oneka: My target market is traveling artists and by-appointment only artists, particularly hair stylists, makeup artists, nail technicians and estheticians.

MW: How did you become interested in doing administrative consulting and particularly for your target market?
I've been in the medical field all my life. Working in the hair and beauty industries was all new to me. Originally, I considered working with small business owners and event planners. Then I thought that I could break into an untouched market and be the first to do so. I so fell in love with the glitz and glamour of the industry and decided to grow. This was the best decision I've made to date.
         Artists that take walk-ins will not really benefit from working with an administrative consultant. Artists that are by-appointment only need assistance with bookings, responding to emails, scheduling, customer service, etc. Traveling artists need assistance with arrangements, being booked solid, accepting deposits to decrease/eliminate no shows, etc.

MW: What are some of your future goals?
Oneka: I see Right-Hand Mrs. becoming an agency that trains people to become administrative consultants and then pairing them with clients. I also see it transitioning from being a service-based business to being a freedom-based business. By this I mean being able to promote and sell informational products in the form of ebooks, teleseminars, workbooks, etc.

MW: Who and what inspires you?
Working a dead end job is what inspires me. I want to be able to leave a legacy and promote entrepreneurship so that my children will never have to work for anyone. My very first client is who inspires me. She packed up and moved across the country, basically to start over from scratch and made it happen all in one year. She is one of the most sought after Hair Extension Specialists in the country, with clients coming from as far away as Kuwait and Dubai. She made a name for herself in this industry and made no excuses while doing it all under 25-years-old. I'm very proud of her and proud to say that she is my BIG little sister.

MW: What do you love most about owning Right-Hand Mrs.?
This, by far, is nothing I've ever experienced in Corporate America. At this time in my life, the freedom to travel and create my own schedule are some great perks that I enjoy. Arranging photo shoots and attending grand openings of my clients are the best. Most importantly, [I enjoy] seeing my clients regain the love for their craft because they are no longer bogged down with the administrative tasks that come along with being a sought after artist.

MW: What is your favorite inspirational quote/saying?
Oneka: Faith is: Following without knowing where; Believing without knowing how; Trusting without knowing why.

MW: What tips/advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business?
Oneka: Running a business is not as easy at it looks. We see successful people and want what they have but don't want to do what they did. You must be willing to put in the work. There will be a lot of sleepless nights. There will be times when you're doing all the work because it's just you. Just stay positive and keep positive people around you because you will need them when you feel like giving up. Stay true to yourself and your vision. Lastly, make sure you have a support system.

7 Ways of Getting Your Customers to Say 'Wow'!

Just imagine. You have walked out of a shop or put down the phone after purchasing something and your immediate reaction is 'Wow!' How do you feel? Excited; satisfied; fulfilled ... eager to return and buy again?

Wouldn't it be great if you could get your customers to feel the same way about dealing with you?

Lots of small business owners (and not so small) seem to think that the customer is merely an interference. But how can you get your customers all pumped up and ready to do business with you again? I'll share some tips on exactly how you can get a "Wow!" response and show how it can positively impact your bottom line.

Get promising
These days, too many business seem reluctant to commit to anything. As a result, you walk away with a nagging doubt that nothing is going to happen and so the whole experience is not pleasant. What a refreshing change to get a business that provides firm promises on dates and times or opening hours. Can you provide a clear promise to your customers? Have a think about each aspect of your business and highlight all your 'promisables' in your sales and marketing stuff. One great tip-- under promise and over deliver. Promise delivery in seven days, knowing you can do it in three days. When the goods arrive four days before expected, that's a 'Wow' factor if there ever was one!
         Important point -- if you can't deliver it, don't promise it!

Be a Tigger
Remember Tigger from Winnie the Pooh? He's all over the place, bouncing up and down with endless energy and enthusiasm. He just leaves his friends breathless! What a great person to be and do business with. Are you enthusiastic when you speak and deal with your customers? Are your staff brimming with enthusiasm? If you can't project an image which says, "I'm happy to be here," how can you expect your customers to feel differently? So, have a Tigger day every day!

First impressions
If you have a shop or office where customers visit you, what do your premises say about your business? Is it modern, fresh-looking, clean and tidy? Or is it worn, tired and generally looking run down? Like it or not, customers will judge you on what they see. They may say "Wow" but for all the wrong reasons!
         A pot of paint and splash of colour can make all the difference, and it doesn't have to cost the earth (these DIY programmes have a lot to answer for!).

Be a problem solver
Despite all businesses believing they have great customer service, the fact is that the majority don't. The main reason is that when people complain, most feel that they have not been listened to and their problem has not been solved. Be a solver of problems-- quickly and efficiently. A motto -- 'Resolve to solve.'

Be their friend
I don't know about you, but I am a sucker for business owners who take their time to know me and recognise me when I next call or visit! The bond and the desire to do more business with those types of entrepreneurs is strong for me. Do you take time to build a relationship with all your key clients? Do you go out of your way to greet them when they next do business? As the saying goes, aim to turn strangers into friends and friends into customers.

Value for money
In this day and age of new technology and the hefty prices that go with it, the concept of giving great value is sometimes forgotten. Creating a 'Wow' moment can be as simple as giving a little bit extra, something unexpected. It doesn't have to be of huge value, it's genuinely the thought that counts. However, don't restrict this idea just to price. Price on its own may not work; it has to be tied in with something else-- 2 for 1, a small gift, etc.
          The quality of your product must also reflect value for money. Don't try and pass off an inferior product with a superior price -- you'll, again, create, the wrong type of 'Wow' moment! Medium price and great quality-- a definite, positive 'Wow.'

Call them
The real killer 'Wow' is calling your customer a few days after he has bought. Asking him if the product is fine, whether it does what he wanted it to do, is one sure way of stopping him in his tracks! If everything is great, then you have a customer for life. If there is a problem, wonderful; you have the opportunity to put it right and...have a customer for life. This is a very simple and powerful way of creating 'Wow.'

So, that's it. If you follow these simple ideas, all your customers will be saying "Wow," and they will be coming back time and time again. Who knows? They may even tell their friends. Take some time to review these tips and see how you can apply them in your business.

WEPP Power!

I don't think I told you guys, but I'm a part of a fabulous program called WEPP, which is Women Entrepreneurs Partnering for Profit, an exciting women's networking and partnership program that launched on September 1st of this year.

Here's a little more info about WEPP:

The brains behind this wonderful initiative is Cheryl Wood, a motivational speaker, author and entrepreneur.
