Introducing...WAHMs WIN!

It is my pleasure to introduce you to a fabulous nonprofit organization I'm happy to be a part of: WAHMS WIN, Inc.!

Founded by Donna Johnson and Tamyka Washington, WAHMs WIN is focused on empowering women to help bring their families, and even their communities, out of poverty. The goal is to bridge the digital divide in our local communities by bringing together our collective expertise for outreach, as trainers and mentors, to work-at-home moms who are in our local communities but lack access, skills and/or resources to successfully build sustainable businesses. We aim to empower them to create their own business success.

Next week, we will be celebrating the launch of our new and improved website with a complimentary, 30 minute teleseminar call, Wednesday, June 1 through Friday, June 3. Each call will be from 1:00-1:30 P.M. Eastern.

The calls will be hosted by Wanda Mays Noel of the Wanda After Dark show and Wine About Books events. Additionally, several successful women entrepreneurs will share their stories, and we will share more details about WAHMs WIN and how you can get involved this summer and in the future.

You can register for the free calls here: http://wahmswinprelaunch.eventbrite.com/.

For more info about the organization, please visit the website, wahmswin.com.

Hope to 'see' you there!

National Small Business Week 2011

Each year since 1963, the President of the U.S. has proclaimed National Small Business Week to recognize the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America. As a part of this week, the U.S. Small Business Association acknowledges the special impact made by outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners.

This year, National Small Business Week will honor the estimated 27.2 million small businesses in America because they are major contributors to the strength of our economy. Check out these facts about small businesses in the U.S.:
  • To be considered a small business, there must be fewer than 500 employees.
  • Firms with fewer than 500 employees represent 99.9 percent of all businesses in the U.S.
  • More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business.
  • Small businesses create 60-80 percent of new jobs in this country.
  • 52 percent of U.S. businesses are home-based.
  • According to the 2007 U.S. Census Bureau Survey of Business Owners, 28.7 percent of all U.S. businesses were owned by women (a total of 7.8 million).
Since it's National Small Business Week, I want to show some love to some of the entrepreneurs I work with and have worked with in the past few months (you can see a list of the majority of all the businesses I've worked with here):

25 Motivational Quotes for Entrepreneurs

I'm sure y'all know by now that I love a good motivational quote. And if you're an entrepreneur, I'm sure you need some encouragement from time to time (I know I do). Here are 25 quotes that inspire and encourage me, and I hope they do the same for you:

  1. "You only have to believe that you can succeed, that you can be whatever your heart desires, be willing to work for it, and you can have it." - Oprah Winfrey
  2. "You must remain focused on your journey to greatness." - Les Brown
  3. "No matter what happens, no matter how far you seem to be away from where you want to be, never stop believing that you will somehow make it. Have an unrelenting belief that things will work out, that the long road has purpose, that the things that you desire may not happen today, but they will happen. Continue to persist and persevere." - Brad Gast
  4. "If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place." - Nora Roberts
  5. "Stop waiting for others to tell you what you can do. Start putting faith into your own strengths and talents. Instead of questioning whether you can reach your goals, move forward with conviction and confidence." - Jane Powell
  6. "...You have to believe in yourself when no one else does-- that makes you a winner right there." - Venus Williams
  7. "It is important to live each day with a positive perspective. It is not wise to pretend problems do not exist, but it is wise to look beyond the problem to the possibilities that are in it. When Goliath came against the Israelites, the soldiers all thought, 'He's so big, we can never kill him' But David looked at the same giant and thought, 'He is so big, I can't miss him.'" - Dale Turner
  8. "Four steps to achievement: plan purposefully, prepare prayerfully, proceed positively, pursue persistently." - William A. Ward
  9. "Faith causes you to pray, push and be persistent even when everything around you seems hopeless and too big to face. Faith is the bridge that connects you from where you are right now to your place of destiny." - Alex Brown
  10. "...Dream big, reach further, climb higher." - Angela Burt-Murray
  11. "If you try to guard yourself against every unlikely danger, you'll never stretch beyond your comfort zone. Don't let the 'what-ifs' run your life. Follow your dreams and have at it." - Diane Conway
  12. "Focus more on your desire than on your doubt, and the dream will take care of itself. You may be surprised at how easily this happens. Your doubts are not as powerful as your desires, unless you make them so." - Marcia Wieder
  13. "...Do not give up. Even when others do not understand. Even when you feel alone with your dreams. Even when the vision gets a little blurred...Your steps are ordered, and you are destined for greatness. You are stronger than your mind can conceive, everything you need lies within..." - LaKesha Womack
  14. "It's important to have dreams, goals and plans in life, but it doesn't mean anything unless there's ACTION behind it! Make sure you're actually doing things that will help you get where you want to be." - Me
  15. "All great achievements require time." - Maya Angelou
  16. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit." - Aristotle
  17. "Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon must inevitably come to pass." - Paul J. Meyer
  18. "No matter where you want to go, as long as you follow your path with faith, dedication and hard work, you are going to get there." - Russell Simmons
  19. "Nothing is impossible, the word itself says, 'I'm possible!'" - Audrey Hepburn
  20. If you're waiting for later, or for things to get better, you'll miss out on the very opportunities that will lift you ever higher. Instead, have confidence in the value of where you now are and what you now have." - Ralph Marston
  21. "Whatever you do, don't abandon your dream. Crawl, walk, cry if you must. Just don't quit!" - Inspired Sistah
  22. "Today, I am devoted to remembering and accepting that I cannot fail! I cannot fail! I simply cannot fail at life!" - Iyanla Vanzant
  23. "No matter how many times you get knocked down, keep getting back up. God sees your resolve. He sees your determination. And when you do everything you can do, that's when God will step in and do what you can't do." - Joel Osteen
  24. "No one ever got ahead by going through the motions. You have to constantly be improving yourself. Make your life the masterpiece you want it to be." - Queen Latifah
  25. "In this life, you have to risk big to win big." - Kimora Lee Simmons

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

One of my goals for this year was to really step my game up when it comes to my business and blog, For Colored Gurls. Doing this has required me to step out of my comfort zone which hasn't been the easiest thing because I'm a person who loooves stability. Some things I've done so far:

  • I recently learned the importance of putting my face and business out there and letting people know what I have to offer. The reason I hadn't really done so before is because I didn't want to be obnoxious or for people to think I was conceited or something. But, I realized I had to promote myself because no one else is going to, and I realized there is an art to selling oneself in an appropriate way. So, while it was a little weird for me initially, I'm getting used to it now.
  • I recently created two YouTube channels (one for Mocha Writer and one for FCG), and I created a BlogTalk Radio Show for FCG. Now, anyone who knows me knows I'm not much of a talker; I'd much rather write than speak. But, since I really want to expand beyond just writing, reach a larger audience and develop my brands, I did what I had to do. I'm not 100 percent comfortable with this just yet, but I'm sure I'll get there.
  • Yesterday, I attended my first ever Chamber of Commerce event (I just became a member). I'll be honest: When my friend invited me, I wasn't sure I would go. I've been to a few networking events, but the majority of the attendees were people who were similar to me, but this was completely different, and I didn't feel that I would feel comfortable in that setting. However, one of my goals is start attending more networking/business events, so I went and actually had a good time.

My point is that if we want to learn, grow our businesses and develop ourselves, we have to learn to step out of our comfort zones-- at least a little. For most of us, starting a business was not something we were exactly comfortable doing, but we did it anyway. And I think to keep our businesses going and thriving, we have to continue to take risks and try things that may initally seem a little scary or do things we never thought we would. And after you do those things, you'll likely realize two things: 1) It wasn't really that big of a deal; and 2) You're a better person for it because you tried something new and different.

How do you step out of your comfort zone? Don't think about too much and just do it. Of course, create a plan first (if necessary), but after you do that, just go ahead. Because if you think about it too much, you might start thinking, "What if this bad thing happens?", psych yourself out and not do anything at all. Also, I suggest sharing your new venture with others. That way, you'll feel like you have to do it because if you don't, people will find you untrustworthy (and that's bad for business). For example, when I decided I wanted to do a radio show, I came up with a date, asked the guest if she could do it, scheduled the show and started promoting it. Now, I can't not do it because it'll make me look bad and like a liar if I don't. Putting a date on your project makes you accountable for doing what you said you would do when you said you would do it.

Whatever your dreams and goals are, take it to the next level and make it great by stepping out of your comfort zone! You won't be disappointed.
