Here are some quick tips to help you get ahead at work, no matter what your current career is:
Be that girl (or guy). Be the person with the positive and optimistic attitude, and always make other people feel your purpose and passion. Stay positive about whatever it is you're doing and sell individuals on your ideas by expressing yourself with enthusiasm.
Be clear. It doesn't matter what field you're in, communication is key and perception is reality. I'm sure you don't want to be misunderstood so be sure to express yourself with the right tone, words and volume. Consider joining an organization such as Toastmasters to assist you in learning how to present yourself to the absolute best of your abilities.
Learn to negotiate. Also, learn to compromise and cooperate; be flexible and listen to every side in any situation. Additionally, it's important to remember that your salary, benefits and any extras aren't automatically set so negotiate them to create the job and employment package you want.
Keep records. Whenever you go above and beyond the call of duty, be sure to write it down. Your boss might not notice the extra work or hours you're putting in. If you're clear about your achievements and back them up with detailed examples, it will help when asking to be considered for new opportunities.
Don't let email run your day. Your email notification going off every 15 minutes can be very distracting. To avoid this, turn off any alerts and focus on what you're doing. If you don't get email alerts, resist the urge to check all the time. Schedule particular times to read and reply to emails.
Occasionally ask yourself if you still love your career. Whether you know your calling early on or have to try a few different things, you should assess your professional happiness often to see if a career change is needed.
