Motivational quotes to inspire you.

"The mathematics of high achievement--
Begin with a dream.
Divide the problems and conquer them one by one.
Multiply the exciting possibilities in your mind.
Subtract all the negative thoughts to get started.

Get Empowered!

Happy Friday, people!

In her book, "Fabulosity: What It Is & How To Get It," Kimora Lee Simmons gives us ways to be empowered instantly. Read on to see how:

  1. Don't blame the system, the screwed-up schooling you received or the chances no one ever gave you. Doing this makes you powerless and means you aren't in control of your destiny. Realize that, yes, you may have your specific barriers when it comes to work, but just like other successful individuals, you'll come up with original ways to overcome them through networking, interning and lateral thinking.
  2. There's almost always a way in to something. If a job gets you in the work world and gets you closer to the field you really want to be in, take it. Remember, most successful people started off small.
  3. Potential will be noticed. If you work hard, stay committed and bring your best self to the table, your efforts will be noticed. If you meet a need, become invaluable and have a fabulous attitude, your employer will not want to let you go.
  4. See the positive aspects of rejection. One door closing can mean another opening. Maybe you're not the right person for that job you just interviewed for, but if you impressed the company, they'll almost always keep you in mind for other job openings or even refer you to others.
  5. Lack of experience and knowledge seems like big obstacles when you're outside the gate, but they are the easiest to overcome. No matter what field you're interested in, it's important that you research the topic and know it. Additionally, start a notebook with thoughts and inspiring quotes from those you admire.
  6. Once you get your foot in the door, maintain the attitude that this your chance to learn. Hands-on experience is the best education. Take every opportunity to learn all you can.

Motivational Mondays- 5.24

Motivational quotes to inspire you.

"There is an art to living well, a meaning for our lives. The careers we choose are our pathways to mastery. They are to amplify our capabilities and values, our character and courage. Answering three questions continually, no matter our age or station, will keep us on a course of productivity, integrity and fulfillment: Who am I? Where am I going? Why am I going there?"
"...God wants [you] to have [your] reward. Prepare to claim it. Have a vision for yourself and others far beyond the present reality. Declare it and work toward it."

Motivational Mondays- 5.17

Motivational quotes to inspire you.

"Life is depending on you to shine. Life is waiting for you to bloom. Life is waiting for you to glorify it. Please don't let life down. Be sure not to allow other people to "should" on you. Folks are always so ready to let you know what you "should be" or "should not be" doing, they get very little done in their own lives. If your mother, father, sister, brother, friend is so sure of what you should be doing, let them do it...It may be challenging to move beyond the expectations and demands others have of or for you, but remember, a good challenge strengthens your muscles."

Get ahead at work

Happy Friday, friends!
Here are some quick tips to help you get ahead at work, no matter what your current career is:

Be that girl (or guy). Be the person with the positive and optimistic attitude, and always make other people feel your purpose and passion. Stay positive about whatever it is you're doing and sell individuals on your ideas by expressing yourself with enthusiasm.

Be clear. It doesn't matter what field you're in, communication is key and perception is reality. I'm sure you don't want to be misunderstood so be sure to express yourself with the right tone, words and volume. Consider joining an organization such as Toastmasters to assist you in learning how to present yourself to the absolute best of your abilities.

Learn to negotiate. Also, learn to compromise and cooperate; be flexible and listen to every side in any situation. Additionally, it's important to remember that your salary, benefits and any extras aren't automatically set so negotiate them to create the job and employment package you want.

Keep records. Whenever you go above and beyond the call of duty, be sure to write it down. Your boss might not notice the extra work or hours you're putting in. If you're clear about your achievements and back them up with detailed examples, it will help when asking to be considered for new opportunities.

Don't let email run your day. Your email notification going off every 15 minutes can be very distracting. To avoid this, turn off any alerts and focus on what you're doing. If you don't get email alerts, resist the urge to check all the time. Schedule particular times to read and reply to emails.

Occasionally ask yourself if you still love your career. Whether you know your calling early on or have to try a few different things, you should assess your professional happiness often to see if a career change is needed.

Motivational Mondays- 5.10.10

Motivational quotes to inspire you!

"What holds most people back isn't the quality of their ideas, but a lack of faith in themselves. Whatever dream you're following, people will always tell you, 'You can't do this,' or 'You'll never be able to do that.' But you can do it. The world belongs to people who say, 'I can.'"

"That's why you can't let negativity get in your ear. Your ear is like an embryo. Negative ideas will grow in there if you're not careful. There are always going to be critics trying to dull your dreams. But you can't let them...focus on what made you so excited about your dream in the first place. Let that excitement drown out the negativity."

- Russell Simmons

5 ways to keep your clients returning

If you're a business owner or freelancer, you probably know it's easier to keep the clients you have instead of finding new ones. However, this might be easier said than done, so here are five ways to keep your clients coming back:
  1. Provide packages for recurring work. If you only provide one-time services, your clients won't have a reason to hire you again. For instance, if you design websites and that's all you do, a client may only hire you once a year. Instead, think about other design needs your client may have such as matching business cards or an email template design.
  2. Give your top clients special treatment. Treat your best clients better than prospective or new clients. These are people who've provided you with the most business and might have even referred you to new clients. Some 'special treatment' you can give them are discounted rates or unexpected gifts. Additionally, you can offer exclusive services; and always make time for last-minute requests from your current clients.
  3. Remember important dates. Send your current clients a physical birthday card or another gift. You can also include a discount coupon or a complimentary product/service. Of course, it takes work to stay on top of these dates, but this will make you stand out from your competition.
  4. Create promos during the year. Even if you're a freelancer, you can have sales and discounts several times a year. For instance, you can celebrate your own birthday or an anniversary by providing current clients with a discount; you can also do this on special holidays like Thanksgiving. Also, if you don't want to continue having discounts, ask other freelancers or business owners (who provide different services that complement yours) to give discounted rates to your clients.
  5. Ask for referrals. Having a referral system has two benefits: 1) It brings you new clients; 2) Having a current client refer a prospect to you increase her/his loyalty to you. You can provide incentives in exchange for referrals like a discount on a future project or a commission. If you don't want to give an incentive (and a lot of times, some clients won't want one either- they might feel like they're selling to their friends), you can just give them discount coupons they can give their friends and associates. If you don't provide an incentive, always send the referrer a simple, yet thoughtful, gift with a nice handwritten note. It's always a good idea to show gratitude to those who've treated you well.

"The people who succeed are the ones who act on their ideas. You don't have to come up with the most incredible idea ever made to be successful, so don't sit paralyzed in fear that your idea isn't 'good enough' to execute."
